Thunderbirds Pull Out Late Win, 5-4
|
The Phoenix Thunderbirds topped the Minneapolis Vikings, 5-4, in Western Conference action at Minneapolis Grounds. The standout performance belonged to Phoenix pitcher and Mechanicsburg, Ohio, native Jay Barrientos. Ko Morita earned his 8th save, after closing out the game. With the win, Phoenix has a record of 37-33. Minneapolis falls to 37-33.
Eddie Lucero came through with a big-time hit for Phoenix. The second baseman smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 5-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
"Jay's a gamer," said Phoenix manager Joe Busch. "Glad he's on our side."
