Destroyers Upend Toros, 4-3
|
The San Diego Destroyers and Tucson Toros played an entertaining game for Seaward Stadium patrons.
The San Diego Destroyers did just enough to sneak past the Tucson Toros, 4-3, at Seaward Stadium. San Diego catcher Tom Sarmiento, in particular, had a standout performance. Harold Ruspoli notched the win in relief. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2.1 innings. His record now sits at 4-2. Jorge Antonio picked up the save for San Diego, his 1st of the year.
The Toros had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Destroyers going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old first baseman Tsuneteru Shimada came to the plate. Shimada hit a solo home run on a first pitch changeup from Tucson hurler Ryan Lloyd. It was Shimada's 9th home run of the year.
Sarmiento told a San Diego Herald reporter that he was "very pleased" with the win.
With the win, San Diego upped its record to 50-35.
