Behind a solid performance from second baseman Javier Gomez, the Phoenix Thunderbirds defeated the Portland Dragons, 7-3. Gomez went 2-2 with 2 doubles and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for the Thunderbirds. Miguel Soto picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Bill Snelgrove suffered the loss. Jimmy Hsia was credited with the save for Phoenix, his 21st of the season.

Gomez had a game-changing double in the top of the eighth. On a first pitch fastball from Justin Kurth, he banged a bases-clearing double to center, giving the Thunderbirds a 6-3 lead. It was the 23rd double of the year for Gomez.

"Our approach was just to try to see something over the plate and be aggressive," Gomez told the Phoenix Chronicle.

The Thunderbirds saw their win-loss record go to 51-49. At the same time, the Dragons fell to 41-60.
