Dragons Come Back Late to Top Thunderbirds, 3-1
|
The Portland Dragons earned a close win over the Phoenix Thunderbirds, thanks in part to Oscar Mercado. The Portland right-hander, who is tied for 3rd in the WC with a 9.7 K/9 rate, played a key role in the 3-1 victory. Portland reliever Alex Urbano picked up the win, upping his record to 4-2. Francisco Gonzales took the loss. Portland's record now stands at 58-50, placing them third in the Western Conference Jonas Division.
Portland took a 2-1 lead on Yahya Kanoro's 18th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Kanoro hit in the top of the eighth, left Phoenix pitcher John Intriago visibly frustrated.
"I felt good. I felt like I was locating the ball well and I was able to keep them off-balance," said Mercado.
