The bats were silent much of the day at Portland Park. But 25-year old second baseman Zheng-ze Gu produced just enough offense to carry the Senators past the Portland Dragons, 2-0. Gu was 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Hawk Hartshorn earned the win to go to 2-9. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. The loss makes Portland 64-62.
With Washington leading 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Gu hit a run-scoring single off Portland hurler Yahya Kanoro. It was the 81st hit of the season for Gu and put his team ahead, 2-0.
"We put on our big boy pants and went to work," said Gu.
