Friars Fall Short, 5-4, at Chicago

The Chicago Phantoms did just enough to sneak past the San Francisco Friars, 5-4, at Foster Field. Chicago pitcher Vito Pels, in particular, had a standout performance. In 7 innings, Pels surrendered 9 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. Simone Banatoni got credit for the save for Chicago. It was his 8th of the year.
Chicago took a 4-2 lead on Ron Jollymour's 25th double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Jollymour hit in the bottom of the seventh, left San Francisco pitcher George Roscoe visibly frustrated.
"We found a way to get it done," Jollymour said.
The Phantoms lead the Western Conference Michael Fridy Division by 8½ games.
