Watanabe Batters Miami Big Time
|
Santiago right fielder Mayumi Watanabe had a fantastic day at the plate at Estadio Guillermón Moncada, knocking out 5 hits and pacing his club to a win, 12-1.
"It was like I was hitting Little League pitching," Watanabe said after his 5-for-5 performance against the Cyclones. "No offense meant to Miami, but it was like I was back in little league again -- I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid park, it was Estadio Guillermón Moncada."
After the game, his manager elaborated on the right fielder's improvements, saying Watanabe spent the offseason trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball.
"That's what I'm trying to do," Watanabe said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."
Mayumi Watanabe singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Victor Alonzo in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Robert Rosas in the 6th and doubled in the 8th.
On the season, Watanabe is batting .295 with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs. He has played in 92 games.
